Columbia County Jail Roster Overview

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office runs the county jail and the public inmate roster. That roster is a SmartWEB JAIL View system, branded SmartCOP, version 3.7.0.4. Sheriff Wallace F. "Wallie" Kitchings leads the agency, and Captain Robert Dees serves as Jail Administrator. The roster is the first place to look for someone arrested in the county. It lists current bookings at the Columbia County Detention Facility. It can also show people who have been released, when you pick the right search type. A basic search is free, and no login is needed.

The county roster does not show every person held in or near Columbia County. It does not cover sentenced state prisoners who have moved to a Florida Department of Corrections prison. It does not cover federal inmates or people held on an immigration matter. For those, you use the state, federal, or ICE locators instead. The roster also does not publish how often it refreshes or how long a released name stays listed. The sheriff's office has not posted those details. When timing matters, the fastest answer is a phone call to the jail.

How to Use the Columbia County Jail Roster

The roster lives at the SmartWEB JAIL View inmate search page. You need at least one search term to begin. A last name works. A first name or date of birth helps when the last name is common. The form warns you if you leave every field blank. Sorting controls let you put the newest bookings first, which is handy after a fresh arrest.

1. Open the SmartWEB JAIL View roster in your browser.
2. Enter at least one search term: last name, first name, or date of birth. For common names, use the last name and first name together.
3. Leave "Search For" set to "Current Inmates Only" for someone believed to be in jail now. Switch to "Released Inmates Only" or "Both Current And Released" to check a recent booking that may have bonded out.
4. Set "Sorted By" to "Booking Date" and "Order" to "Descending" to see recent bookings first, then click Submit and open the record for charges, bond, statute, and court information.

If no record appears, the booking may still be in progress, the name may be spelled differently, or the person may have been released or moved. Try a released search next. When the roster still comes up empty, call the jail or use one of the other channels below.

Columbia County Roster Search Fields

The JAIL View form keeps its fields simple. You can search by name or birth date, and you choose whether to see current inmates, released inmates, or both. Release date fields stay hidden until you pick a released or both search. Two dropdowns control how results sort. The login fields belong to an internal modal and are not needed for a public search. The table below lists the fields the public form accepts.

Submit and Reset buttons sit on the form. A Login button and a Request Access button open an agency login modal. Public users skip those and run the free search.

What a Columbia County Inmate Profile Shows

A roster result is more than a name. The public record can show address, age, booking date, charges, the Florida statute tied to each charge, a court case number, the arresting agency, bond, and court information. A booking photo is available on at least some current records through an "Enlarge Photo" control. An expander control marked with a plus sign opens extra charge notes. Not every internal field is public. Transport dates and locations are not disclosed, and medical, mental-health, and deep classification details stay private. The table maps the fields you will see.

Finding County, State, and Federal Inmates

People confuse county jail custody with state prison custody all the time. The county roster covers pre-trial inmates and people serving short county sentences. Pre-trial means a person waiting for trial who has not been convicted. Once a person is sentenced to state prison, classification staff prepare a commitment packet, and the person transfers to the Florida Department of Corrections. After transfer, the county roster no longer tracks them. You then use the Florida Department of Corrections offender search by name or DC number. Federal and immigration custody use their own tools.

For sentenced state prisoners, the FDC inmate population search shows the DC number, current facility, offense, sentence, and release information. For federal custody, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator, which searches by number or by name, race, sex, and age. For immigration detention, the ICE Online Detainee Locator System searches by A-number with country of birth, or by exact name and country. ICE also runs a Detention Reporting and Information Line at 1-888-351-4024. No Bureau of Prisons prison and no ICE facility sit inside Columbia County, so a federal pretrial hold may need the U.S. Marshals or court channel.

VINELink can alert you to a release or transfer, but treat it as a backup to the sheriff roster, not a replacement, because coverage depends on participating agencies.

Note: A roster hold or detainer means another authority controls release, so call the jail to learn which agency must act before bond can free the person.

Columbia County Jail and Prison Facilities

Columbia County holds people in more than one kind of facility. The county jail handles local arrests and short sentences. The detention facility holds minimum, medium, and maximum custody classifications across 340 beds. Classification is the jail's process for deciding custody level and housing. The state prisons are not the place to look for a fresh local arrest. Use the FDC offender search after sentencing or transfer instead.

Booking Process in Columbia County

Booking is the intake event that follows an arrest or a court commitment. A person is arrested by the sheriff's office, Lake City Police, the Florida Highway Patrol, or another local agency, then taken to the Columbia County Detention Facility at 389 NW Quinten St. Booking processes people arrested by local law enforcement and people sentenced by Columbia County courts. A one-time, non-refundable $15 subsistence fee is charged at each intake. After booking, the roster can show the booking date, charges, statute, bond, court case number, and a mugshot. How soon that record posts online is not officially published, so the jail phone line is the backup.

People who can post bond may be released before long custody. People who cannot bond out appear before a judge within the first 24 hours of arrest. First appearance is held each day at the detention facility by Zoom. The judge tells the arrestee the charges and the bond amount for each charge. Classification then sets custody and housing, medical staff screen for health needs, and the person waits for court, release, or transfer. A booking can be slowed when a name is entered differently or a hold from another agency applies.

Visitation and Communication Rules

Visits, phone calls, email, and video at the county jail run through Smart Communications after a 2025 vendor change. The facility began moving from Securus to Smart Communications effective June 24, 2025, and the switch was expected to take 60 to 90 days. Each inmate gets a tablet for video visits, phone, email, text, and educational use. Family and friends set up an account at SmartInmate.com. Incoming personal mail is processed off-site for security. The processing center scans each letter into the inmate's tablet account, and inmates do not get the paper envelope. Mail needs the inmate's full name and inmate number, and it goes to CCSO-SCH, P.O. Box 1907, Pinellas Park, FL 33780. Call the jail if you do not know the inmate number.

The clearest path to reach someone in custody is the jail itself and its communication vendor. Money for an inmate goes to a commissary account, which the person uses for approved items. The county jail takes deposits through several channels. A public lobby kiosk accepts cash, debit, and credit, and cash is the cheapest option, with funds usually available in about 15 minutes.
